CASA May Newsletter

Dear CASA amig@s We would like to start this month's newsletter with good news but our hearts remain hurt when on on April 27th a solidarity and support caravan was attacked by paramilitaries before arriving to San Juan Copala, an autonomous municipality 3 hours away from Oaxaca City. During the attack against the Support and Solidarity Caravan, two compañeros were assassinated by paramilitary forces, Alberta "Bety" Cariño and Jyri Jaakkola. This month's newsletter is dedicated to Bety and Jyri and their work for social justice.

CASA Jan/Feb Newsletter

Saludos solidarios to all our compañeros around the world! As the New Year rolled in, the first months have brought a number of groundbreaking events throughout Latin America. In January, the world turned to Haiti, when an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude rumbled through the island and destroyed homes, communities, and major infrastrutures. The world watched as the U.S. military closed off aid planes with food and medical aid from landing, and instead occupied/militarized lands by bringing in soldiers in uniform with weapons on hand. Nothing short of new, the U.S.-Mexico Border continues with its militarization and criminalization of undocumented immigrants from Latin America, as the Obama Administration continues to fall short of its "hopes" and "change". Despite imperial forces sweeping through, people at the grassroots are mobilizing and building networks stronger than ever.

Greetings from C.A.S.A. Chapulin in Oaxaca!

"[C.A.S.A.] November - Newsletter - Día de Muertos"

Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead is celebrated all throughout Mexico and some parts of Latin America on November 2nd. This celebration reminds us that death is a transition in life and not an end, thereby challenging Western dual concepts about life. Families prepare for the festivity by building alters (or ofrendas) in memory of their loved ones and visiting their graves. In Oaxaca, Dia de los Muertos is an important celebration where many family members remain hopeful and keep the spirits of their loved ones alive and close to them. Check out our newsletter to hear an interview on how the family of Lorenzo Sampablo Cervantes, one of 26 people that died during the 2006 movement, is celebrating Dia de los Muertos this year. Make sure to also read an article-ofrenda about the family of Lorenzo Sampablo Cervantes and the family of Fong Lee -two families that lost loved ones in the face of paramilitary oppression in Oaxaca and police brutality in Minneapolis. Also, check out an independent media film festival in honor of Brad Will, and a Universal Call-out to protest the Acteal massacre of 1997 in Chiapas.
