The Zapatistas are a group of Indigenous Maya of Chiapas who, following 500 years of oppression and marginalization, rose up on January 1st, 1994 (the day NAFTA came into effect) declaring "Ya Basta" ("Enough"), demanding land, education, democracy, justice and protection of Indigenous rights and culture. This section follows their struggle for justice.
