Republicans need some form of immigration reform to assure electoral success in the upcoming November legislative elections, this much is clear to most US political analysts these days. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like a Bush administration victory on this issue is going to be quite as easy as they’d hoped.

Police clash with protestors on Chiapan coast

On Monday May 8, police forces removed and detained dozens of protestors from the mayors’ offices in Bochil, and Escuintla, Chiapas. The community members originally took the government offices in protest against mayors Daniel Morales and Darinel Méndez whom they accused of corruption and inaction in the wake of Hurricane Stan, respectively.

Crackdown in Atenco, Mexico; Death, Injuries and Jail

San Salvador Atenco, Mexico—At 7 AM this past Wednesday, May 3rd, state police blocked 60 flower vendors from setting up their stands at the Texcoco local market in the State of Mexico, about 20 miles east of Mexico City. The police beat and arrested those who resisted. The flower vendors called to the residents of neighboring San Salvador Atenco for help and the Atenco residents blocked the highway that borders their town and leads to Texcoco.
